A Brief History of Catalina Verdugo Adobe
One of the most wonderful things about Catalina Verdugo Adobe is the rich and storied history of this beautiful place. In fact, the Adobe historical building is significant because it has been around for nearly 200 years, in fact it’s 190 years at the time of this writing, or at least that’s the best estimate we have because it was believed to be built in 1828.
This building originally consisted of a South wing and the main room. Later, in the early 1900s, the North wing was then added to completely round out the building and make it bigger and roomier for the occupants.
This dwelling was originally created by Teodoro Verdugo, grandson of José Maria Verdugo, the father of Catalina Verdugo, who the abode was obviously named after. The property has changed ownership throughout the years on numerous different occasions, but developer FP Newport recognized the historical value of this amazing place and decided to preserve it because it is an abode worth preserving.
Eventually the property was sold to Dr. Ernest Bashor and their family kept the property for many years. Again, the historical value of this property was eventually recognized by the city of Glendale, who purchased it in 1989. Now it is a historical site that you can visit at any time by appointment if you would like to check out the facilities. But you are welcome to walk through the park at any time as well if that’s something you’re interested in.
A Historic Perspective of the Oak of Peace
There is a tree on the Verdugo Adobe property named the Oak of Peace. It received this name in 1847 when a representative for Lieutenant Colonel Fremont named Jesus Pico met with Mexican army commander and his brother General Andres Pico in January 1847. During this meeting, Jesus recommended that his brother surrender to the United States because Fremont’s army had them bested in size and strength.
The peaceful resolution to this conflict took place under a large oak tree 30 yards from the Adobe dwelling. The treaty was signed two days later near what is now known as the Hollywood Bowl. Some people believe the Oak of Peace is the true birthplace of the state of California.
